Energy rebate programs

January 11, 2008

I received a notice in this month’s bill from my gas company about rebates for insulation, HE gas furnaces, tankless water heaters, HE washing machines, etc. and am wondering how this works for a new build. Would you really get a bunch of money back simply for putting new insulation in, or is it only for replacing old stuff? Well, the PDF application form has a spot for checking if it’s a new build or existing building, so it must be for new builds, too. Seems there’s quite a few rebates for my state, but many of them are for the west side. Hmmm. Here’s another page from my power company.

I know much of this will change in a few years, but I want to get an idea of what is available.

We have the tankless water heater. It is great. I don’t know yet how it affects our bills though.. :)

Did you install it or was it there when you moved in? How do you find it as far as wait time? Is it gas? So many questions, lol…good to see you here. :)

From what I read, it most efficent ones to have a seperate tankless heater at each hot water location, like one for the shower, one for the bathroom sink, one for the kitchen sink, one for the dishwasher, this way you dont have to wait 30 seconds for the hot water to flush out the cold water that’s sitting in you pipes as the water moves thru your pipes in you house to where you have the hot water on.

In my house, the Master bathroom shower is a direct shot from the water heater so I get pretty much instant hot water, but any other sink is a good 60 seconds of running water before I get any hot water at all.

Yeah, that’s how it is here…and today with such cold temps the water is *icy.* We have a gas-heated big tank. So either way you’re waiting…just seems like the idividual tanks would be a better use of water, but certainly would add to the overall cost of the project.

I think it is pretty efficient. Can take up to a min in close locations to get warm….a little longer in our bathroom..which is on the other end of the house. We had it installed. My bil is a plumber. but separate ones would be nice..LOL but I never run out of hot water which is awesome. If I have enough water pressure I can run the tub, dishwasher and washer at the same time.

I found this website to be very useful when it came to explaining the tankless water heater. http://homerepair.about.com/od/plumbingrepair/ss/tankless_hwh.htm.
